Becoming a student at Mohave Community College will soon be easier than ever, thanks to MCC’s new electronic catalog. Registration information, programs of study details and course descriptions will be accessible soon via a database-driven content management system.

“Printing a college catalog was a large expense for many years at the college,” said MCC President Michael Kearns. “Several years ago we went to an online catalog to help save resources and the planet; but the online version was simply a PDF (portable document format) of the print version that was provided to advisors.

“The document was cumbersome not easy to search and difficult to change or correct if errors were found. This new e-catalog is fast and friendly for both students and staff,” Kearns added.

With the new content management system, called Acalog, changes can be made throughout the document in a timely manner; and, at the same time, provide content editors with electronic edit tracking.

The search feature in the e-catalog site is user-friendly. It allows searches by subject and keyword. For people who liked to bookmark the pages of the paper catalog so they can easily find certain pages or sections, the online version allows users to tag favorites and easily return to courses of interest.
Plus, Facebook users can share their program of study with friends and family.

The new system provides students and advisors with sophisticated tools that save time and make accurate information readily available. It also enables the college to meet its sustainability goals, reducing paper consumption and the energy required to print and distribute paper catalogs.
