More than 75,000 volumes are available in the four MCC libraries, and all information is available to residents who can either go online to the library site at http://www.mohave.edu/library or stop into one of the campus libraries to obtain their library cards - at no cost.

“This is a full-service library offering best sellers, talking books, movies via VCR and a growing number of DVDs,” said Claudia Timmann, the dean of library services at MCC. “We have children’s materials, oversized books for children and adults, books with oversized print at the Hargrove Library on the Bullhead City campus, reference books and several databases through which newspapers and magazines from all over the world can be accessed.

“We offer borrowers the chance to save money by not having to buy the new best-sellers as well as some movies - old and fairly new,” she said. “We have USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and several books that appeal to small children, teens or adults.”

The libraries also have complete collections of old magazines such as National Geographic back to 1933 and Arizona Highways back to 1952.

“Approximately 30 percent of those who visit the libraries are members of the communities not enrolled in classes at MCC,” she said. “We welcome more residents of Mohave County to come in and see what we offer. I think they will be impressed.”

The campus libraries are staffed by 13 full-time and permanent part-time employees and 14 student assistants - all trained to help faculty, students and members of the community find the information they need, Timmann said.

“We also have meeting rooms available to the community in the libraries on the Henry Campus-Bullhead City and the Lake Havasu City campus,” she said. “We offer Internet access in all of the libraries and we hold monthly events at most of the libraries that Mohave County residents are invited to enjoy.”

Displays are set up monthly at the libraries highlighting subjects such as “Banned Books Month” or “U.S. Constitution Month,” and there are other public events including “Speaking Loudly in the Library,” which usually focuses on poetry reading. Film nights are held each Wednesday evening on the Neal Campus-Kingman.

“In addition to all the usual information available at the libraries, we have several databases dedicated to genealogy,” Timmann said. “We have a group that comes in almost daily to the Kingman campus library to work on genealogy and there are quite a few individuals who come in to research information on the history of their families.

“New books, magazines, periodicals and reference information come in almost daily,” she said. “And library patrons donate VHS and DVD movies on nearly a regular basis. With all these materials, we believe our library has information not available elsewhere in Mohave County, and we invite members of the community to stop in and see for themselves and utilize our services.”

Timmann has been dean of MCC’s library services since 2006. Prior to her joining MCC as librarian on the Lake Havasu City campus, she worked as an undergraduate services technology librarian at the University of Arizona. She earned a master’s degree of science in library and information studies and two bachelor’s degrees - Spanish and English literature - from the University of Alabama.
