Faculty member Howell named to MSTEPP board

LORI HOWELLLori Howell, a resident faculty member with the chemical dependency studies program at Mohave Community College, has been named to the board of directors of the Mohave County Substance Abuse Treatment Education and Prevention Partnership (MSTEPP).

MSTEPP will begin in March to distribute its first edition of the Mohave County Area Substance Abuse Treatment Community Resource Guide, which lists providers for substance abuse treatment as well as peer support and relapse prevention. The guides are free and will be available at police stations, sheriff’s stations, health care providers, Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous offices and hospitals.

The group is also distributing Prescription Abuse and Cough Syrup Abuse pamphlets designed to provide parents with needed information about these drugs. Prescription drug and cough syrup abuse have recently surpassed methamphetamine as the most common form of drug abuse among youth in Mohave County.

MSTEPP is also continuing to advance its agenda to bring a residential treatment center to Mohave County.

In addition to Howell, other new directors include Teri Wise of Bullhead City, Jon Longoria of Kingman, Diane Pelzer from Mohave County Juvenile Drug Court and John Slaughter from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Department.

MSTEPP meetings are open to the public and are held the first Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. at the Mohave Mental Health clinics in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City via teleconference.
