Further education a career move to ponder at Career Expo 2008
6th October 2008
When economic numbers go down, the number of students seeking an education goes up. Job security, a steady paycheck and a career doing what you really enjoy are all possible with a college education.
Approximately 50 Mohave County employers will be split among the three upcoming Career Expo 2008 events on Mohave Community College’s campuses in Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City. An alternative to consider now, with a troubled economy, is beginning or returning to college to earn a certificate or degree that will allow you to enter the field you always envisioned.
MCC career planning counselors, admissions advisors and directors of many MCC programs will be on hand during the three Career Expo 2008 events to help prospective students decide if furthering their education is the best career route to take.
Career Expo 2008 will be held Oct. 14 on MCC’s Henry Campus-Bullhead City, Oct. 15 on the Neal Campus-Kingman and Nov. 6 on the Lake Havasu City campus, each running from 1 to 7 p.m. Job seekers can attend one or all events.
“The basic classes required for nearly any degree can be completed at MCC,” said Sharon Becker, MCC’s director of recruiting and career planning, “but we offer a large number of programs that are career based, and these are the shortest educational route to good-paying occupations.”
Career programs offered at MCC are culinary, automotive service technology, nursing, dental hygienist, paralegal, pharmacy technology, physical therapist assistant, dental assistant, truck driver training, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, surgical technology, administration of justice and business administration.
Other programs include chemical dependency therapy, computer information systems, education, casino games dealing, construction technology, drafting technology, medical assisting, welding technology, business, social and behavioral science, fire science, science with chemistry, geology or life science emphases, general technology and emergency medical training.
The expo is a good time for Mohave County high school students to check out the job market and to find out more about the type of jobs available in the tri-state area.
“I would hope the high school students in Mohave County will take the time to visit their local Career Expo 2008 because this may be their one chance to see what the local job markets are really like,” said Roger Jacks, the superintendent of Kingman Unified School District. “We all know that some of the large companies in the county are hiring, but the students should know what jobs these companies are really hiring for.
“The students will be able to see whether the jobs available in Mohave County are something they want to pursue or if a college education is the route they should take,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for our juniors and seniors to check out career paths instead of just what kind of job they might find after graduation. This might be their first experience with reality after high school.”
