President makes time to chat with students

4th February 2010

President Michael Kearns holds an open discussion with students at the North Mohave Campus of Mohave Community College in Colorado City, to hear their concerns and give them updates and developments within the college.Mohave Community College President Michael Kearns visited the North Mohave Campus in Colorado City on Tuesday and spent the four o’clock hour chatting with local students over coffee, hot chocolate and pastries. Kearns held an open, casual question-and-answer session with a standing-room-only crowd.

Kearns told the group that MCC’s ITV (interactive television) system will be expanded, and will soon include classrooms in Beaver Dam and Pipe Springs. One of the College’s future goals is to create more space to support student life, including food services, greater computer access and student gathering places.

He mentioned that MCC is making further efforts to team with institutions offering bachelor’s degrees to enhance student opportunities for higher education. Kearns said this is possible because of the work done by MCC administrators to even better position MCC financially and hedge the institution against the current economic challenges facing the state and the nation.

Both Kearns and students expressed their mutual appreciation. Kearns said he likes to visit the North Campus because the students and staff are welcoming, friendly and polite. Multiple students said they appreciate the education opportunities the North Campus offers them and the staff’s warm reception and helpful guidance.

Barbara Wilson, a nursing student, said she travels from Page, Ariz., to attend MCC because there is not a school in her area offering nursing. Wilson expressed her gratitude for MCC’s commitment to a high quality nursing program on the North Campus.

Kearns told students that recently a consultant said MCC should be proud of its unique ability to deliver a nursing program “across the Grand Canyon” with such high success. MCC’s ITV system makes this possible. He also assured the students he is committed to maintaining a quality college presence in the area.

Lynn Ross, another nursing student, told Kearns she chose MCC because of the atmosphere at the campus. She said she feels the staff genuinely cares about her success. “The instructors, like Dr. Don Timpson and Dr. Julie Chew, are top quality,” she added.

MCC is part of the state of Arizona community college system and has four physical campuses and a large online learning division. For more information about MCC go to http://www.mohave.edu/, or call the North Mohave campus at 800-678-3992.
